Operation Swamp 81
It's twenty years since operation Swamp 81 led to heightened tension in Brixton. Swamp 81 was a police initiative that meant anyone could be stopped and searched under the suspicion of Wrong Doing Act. In 5 days 950 people, mostly black were stopped and searched raising issues of prejudice in the Police force. After Michael Bailey was seen to be left to bleed to death by the police on Atlantic Road rumors started to fly about police brutality.
Within hours over 200 youths which then snowballed into 5000 rioters caused 279 police to be injured and 56 police cars burnt out! Now remebered as The Brixton Riots.
Swamp 81 is also remembered through the guise of Loefah's imprint of the same name. For my money one of the hottest bass driven labels currently releasing - His first 8 Releases from Skream/The Bug/Addison Groove/Pinch/Bodica and Kryptic Minds shows a serious statment of intent!
The Boiler room have just showcased the label with 4 live mixes that are all quality in there own right. Get into these here
